Never a band to rest on their laurels, The Hubbards return with new single ‘Box 42’. Coming almost exactly two months since the release of previous single ‘Good When I’m Done’, ‘Box 42’ sheds the darkness that permeated the aforementioned in favour of something softer, more subtle, yet no less encompassing.
Where ‘Good When I’m Done’ felt like the band at their most matured, or even at times cynical, ‘Box 42’ is sprawling and expansive, channelling the band’s trademark self-deprecation effortlessly, while still harbouring the idiosyncratic optimism that’s endeared the Hull four-piece to so many.
Taking the effervescent energy of indie-pop buzz bands such as JAWS, and combining it with an irrefutable tenacity that owes far more to punk’s DIY ideals than the polished production of the aforementioned, The Hubbard’s occupy an uncharted middle ground between established indie-pop and hipster swagger, a formula that has seen tracks played on both Radio One and 6Music, while previous singles ‘Cold Cut’ and more recently, ‘Easy Go’ were used on ‘Made In Chelsea’. Such acclaim has made the band something of hometown heroes in their native Hull, and as a result, they recently played as the first act to headline their city’s brand new 3,500 capacity Hull Venue.
With what seems like an almost constant stream of releases continuing to propel The Hubbards ever upwards in their ascent to the top of the game, ‘Box 42’ shimmers and soars over spindley guitars and skittering percussion; its restrained nature and typically offbeat yet heartfelt lyricism allowing the track to feel unequivocally Hubbards, while still managing to press forward in to new musical territory.
